Being in the Moment | Being Happy

The way to happiness comes from being in the present moment. This principle is taught in Buddhism. If you are a reader, the chances are that you already know some version of the statement “don’t worry about the past, don’t fear for the future just live in the present moment”.

Almost all great influential people agree with the above statement. Some of them I have mentioned below:

“I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.”

– Mark Twain

“Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why it is called the present.”

– Alice Morse Earle

“Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry – all forms of fear – are caused by too much future, and not enough presence. Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness, and all forms of non-forgiveness are caused by too much past, and not enough presence.”

– Eckhart Tolle

How to live in the present moment?

  1. Notice what is around you: don’t define it, experience it.
  2. Feel your body, feel the air going into your lungs and coming out. Feel your legs, the figures, your arms. Also try imagining blood circulating in your body from your lungs to you your arms, legs, your brain and back.
  3. Notice the silence in between the words during a conversation.
  4. See how branches of a tree respond to wind.
  5. Close your eyes and notice your thoughts. See how your brain is generating thoughts. Laugh how silly some of your thoughts are. It will remind you that you are not the mind., your mind is just a tool. Do it consistently, and you will learn to control your thoughts.
