The Art of Setting Goals
Everyone knows the importance of setting goals. But only a few set goals. If you are one of them, that’s great, but remember that setting goals are not enough. In a 100-meter sprint at the Olympic Games, Usain Bolt who had won gold medal has the same goal as the rest of the participants, which is to win the gold medal. But the thing which makes them different even tho they have the same goal is the system they follow.
“You do not rise to the level of your goals; you fall to the level of your systems.” – James Clear
What is a system?
A system is a routine, your game plan to achieve your goal. Let me share a great way of setting your goal and achieve it. It is called the domino effect; in this method, we set goals keeping the end in mind.
How to set goals:
- Think about what you want to be in life.
- Where do you see your self in 5 years to become that person?
- To be at that position what you will be in 1 year.
- To get to that 1-year position, what must be your monthly goal.
- What must be your weekly goal?
- Your daily goal
- and what you have to do now to achieve that daily goal.
This effect is called domino effect because when you arrange dominos in one line, you only have to push one domino and all the other dominos will fall. Similarly, you just have to do 7th goal “what you have to do now to achieve the daily goal now” to achieve your ultimate goal.
Lat’s take an example. If you want to be fit but at present, you are 24 kgs overweight:
- You want to be the physically fittest person even at old age
- In 5 years: You must run many marathons, have six-packs!
- In 1 year: Run at least one marathon, get your body in shape.
- In 1 month: two kg per month
- In 1 week: look 0.5 kg per week
- in 1 day: Go to the gym, Run, loose 70gram per day
- Now: you walk, take stairs instead of the lift, say no to soft drinks and junk food etc.
By this method, you will exactly know what you have to do at a given moment.
Now I ask you what one thing you have to do right now in order to achieve your goal?
Peace 🙂
