How to have a healthy Work-Life Balance

Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.”

-Dolly Parton

In today’s world of rising distractions like the internet, social media and web/tv series, it has become increasingly challenging to manage time and responsibilities, resulting in an unbalanced lifestyle. Hence, one must develop time management skills to have a well-rounded life.

Let us start by gaining our time back. According to a recent survey, the average man spends nearly 4 hours every day on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, tv, etc. The time spent on these activities seldom benefits us. Imagine, what would happen if we can gain this time back? What can you do in an extra 4 hours every day? You might think that you are not this kind of person, you won’t spend that much time on social media and YouTube. But is it so? I also used to think like that, until I tracked my app usage on my phone. So I ask you, before coming to any conclusion, please check your app usage data to get to a concrete conclusion.

Learning to say ‘No’ is the best thing you can do to get control over your time and your life. I used to say yes to everything because saying no is hard. But you have to power through it, start saying no, say no to the click-bait titles on YouTube, blogs, articles, posts. Go even further and say no to things which you think will waste your time.

Brian Tracy, author of the best selling books “Eat That Frog” and “No Excuses!”, suggested the best practice to achieve work-life balance. His suggestion is so good that I think one must follow it religiously. He says, to have a balanced and wonderful life, we must have three types of goals. These goals work in harmony with each other to develop different aspects of our lives.

  1. Business, career and financial goals

These goals are called the WHAT goal. What do you do to earn money? Your livelihood depends on these goals.

  2. Personal family and health goals

These goals are called WHY goals. These are the most important goals. These goals are the reason you must have WHAT goals in the first place. Most people spend much of their time in business and career goals that they forget to have family, health and personal goals, this results in reduced life satisfaction and poor work-life balance. Your WHAT goals must be the means to achieve your WHY goals.

  3. Professional growth and personal development goals

These goals are called HOW goals. These goals will help you to grow your skills which in-turn help you to achieve better career, business, and financial goals. Thus, increasing your potential to earn more. These goals include education, college, etc. Most people stop having these goals after finishing college. As a result, they don’t have much improvement in their business and career.

You should work towards all these three goals simultaneously to lead a better life.

It is “HOW” you achieve “WHAT” in order to enjoy “WHY”.

Take away:

  1. Say No to useless activities.
  2. Have “What”, “Why” and “How” goals.

Bye, Take care 🙂
