1. Keep Trying

1. Keep Trying

I dedicate this series to friends who are preparing for exams like Civil Services, Medical entrance test, Charted Accountant, and also those who are seeking for a job, into entrepreneurship and business. It is my humble attempt to make you KEEP TRYING.

I have completed my masters from IIT Bombay. To pursue a master’s degree in IIT, we have to clear the GATE exam, which is not an easy task. I have failed to get a seat in my 1st attempt. But because of the support of my family and friends, I could get All India Rank 89 for my second attempt. You could say that I failed at my first attempt, and I agree. But it is not necessarily a bad thing. I realized that it is a good thing, cause we learn from our failures, provided if you have a growth mindset and not a fixed mindset. We will talk about mindsets in the next article.

Michael Jordan, the greatest basketball player ever, got rejected to play for his school basketball team; he said, “The reason why I am successful is because of failure, failure is the reason for my success.” Thomas Edison invented the light bulb after 10,000 failed attempts, said, ” I have not failed. I have just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Kevin Hart, the most popular stand-up comedian in the world, had to listen to ” NO” 3,608 times before he got his big break.

Got rejected, failed 10,000 times, 3608 NO’s, yet they became great, what is common in all these extraordinary people? Yes, you guessed right, they never gave up, they kept trying. But how did they keep trying? We all know how depressing it feels to fail; it makes us think we are not smart enough; we lack talent. And yet we see some people keep trying even when it seems evident that there is no hope. Who are these people? And more importantly, can we do the same?

Answer: These are the people with the GROWTH MINDSET.

To classify broadly, we have two kinds of people, people with Growth Mindset and people with a Fixed Mindset. Don’t be worried, If you think that you have a fixed mindset. With some practice, we can learn to change our fixed mindset to a growth mindset.

I will cover in detail about the mindsets and how we can use them to our advantage, to KEEP TRYING.
